I hope this article helps you make some extra cash. One of the fastest ways I have found to earn money online is writing for Examiner.com. I found out about Examiner through Monster.com. I had posted my resume on their website and was contacted because I had 'writer' in my work history.

So far I have published about 82 articles with examiner and have made approx. $300 without any effort (payment is made after the first $25). Articles are short, to the point and local. It's important to chose a subject you are knowledgeable about, because this makes writing the article easier and is informative for the reader.

They have a local incentive of $1 extra pay per article as well as $2 per day if you can get a local company to sponsor you ~ this isn't as difficult as it sounds, because its only $30 for them to sponsor you and many companies respect Examiner and are glad of the free exposure you have been giving them in your articles. So right now, its possible to make at least $100 a month when you are up and running, especially if you take on a couple of examiner titles. For example I was Tampa Frugal Family Examiner, Tampa Festival Examiner, and now Tampa Fountain of Youth Examiner!

You also get $50 for every writer you refer.

Reasons to write for Examiner.com include:

1. Exposure; writing for one of the top, reputable online sites.

2. Improves your credibility as a writer.

3. Leads to other writing positions.

4. Local recognition; when you advertise and promote local goods, activities, businesses or events etc, you gain exposure as an expert in your topic.

5. First rate training and customer support.

6. Great referral program.

7. Articles appear at (or near) the top of Google and Yahoo searches.

8. Writers are often asked to appear on TV or radio programs to give interviews on their topic of expertise.

9. Competitive pay rates.

10. Short articles 200-400 words.

Here are the steps to become a writer for examiner.com

1. Follow this link to begin the sign up process:

http://www.examiner.com/ change the location to the area nearest to you.

2. Chose a topic you are knowledgeable or passionate about.

3. Fill out the application. Personal Information, Experience and a writing sample: (Be careful with grammar, punctuation and spelling).

4. You will receive an email informing you whether your application has been accepted or not.

5. If you have been accepted, you will be asked to submit a photo and a brief bio of yourself. Examiner.com will ask you to authorize a background check using your personal identity information. (This is a safe process and is only used for the background check).

6. Once this is complete, you are up and running and free to publish as many articles as you wish. The emphasis of examiner.com is on 'local' information in your given area.

As an addendum Pamela, they have a great referral program. If you become a writer, you can invite your friends to join. You will receive $50 credit for every person who becomes an examiner. If you are interested in signing up, I would be very grateful if you could add my id 32771 where it asks who referred you. I hope to see you on the examiner pages!

Great informative hub! I will need to find out more in detail though. I am careful with what I sign for. You never know, I might be signing my life away and not know it, LOL. BTW, any money invest in this such as an application fee or process fee? Any deadline or restricted to what to write?

brightforyou profile image

brightforyou Hub Author 2 years ago

Hi Tim-tim - there are no fees and I'm really loving the professional articles and local attention I get - it is such a respected national online newspaper. I'm averaging $13-$15 per week for just one article a day. Please remember to add me as your referral source if you do sign up: Helen ID 32771

brightforyou, Examiner is paying well, so that's good. Another place to check is Demand Studios, but you have to get accepted first. Then there's Textbroker too. I'm not one who enjoys writing for specific clients. That's why I like HubPages. I can write what I want when I want. Kind Regards

Hi, Kind regards, thanks for the heads up for Demand Studios and Textbroker - I hadn't heard of either of these!

Interesting blog but did I get this right: after writing 12 articles you made ten dollars? That's it? I find that to be very low ... I was making ten dollars a page in highschool getting asian buddies through English class by writing their essays. Forget the Internet, go and hang out around a highschool for some extra cash lol.

brightforyou profile image

brightforyou Hub Author 23 months ago

Hi Mr Happy, sorry its taken me so long to answer your question. Yes, I had said 12 articles and I made $10.. Things have improved now as you get a further $1 an article if you keep it local and another $1 per article if you get sponsored by one of the companies you promote.. on top of that you get the traffic revenue - but for me it was just too much work for too little - so I stopped writing for Examiner.com in May. I was pleased that I had 127 subscribers and got some really good comps from local companies - so if you have the time, I definitely recommend Examiner and may consider writing for them again one day when I have the time...

Will Examiner work if you are located from a a different continent? Like Europe or Asia?

brightforyou profile image

brightforyou Hub Author 22 months ago

Hi ilovehoroscopes - no I don't think so consider the emphasis is on LOCAL events etc. you might want to check and see if there is similar wherever you are located. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a question for me.

Hi Betty

Thanks again for stopping by and your comments. I've just started writing for Patch.com (AOL) and so will no doubt be writing a hub on this. I hope you go ahead a get a writing position with Examiner because it gives you great exposure... thanks again Betty!

I actually signed up for Examiner and was accepted and wrote an article. For me, it was to time consuming to research local news to write about so I deleted my account. Now, after reading your hub, I'm thinking of giving it another try, under a different name. I will sign up under you if I decide to do this again. It's just the "local thing" that I'm not fond of. Thanks so much! I am a fan.
